NewsTWO PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN VILLAGES NEAR LESKOVAC BECAME A BETTER PLACE FOR EDUCATION OF CHILDREN THANKS TO OPPORTUNITY BANK DONATION

20/11/2016

On Saturday 15th October 2016, Opportunity Bank celebrated its traditional Servant Leadership Day – a day of care for local community as a way of demonstrating responsibility toward small and rural communities in which our bank does business – by painting classrooms, placing new desks and chairs and setting up a basketball hoop, a board and a furnace in the primary school “Branko Radičević” based in the village of Brestovac, near Leskovac.

All children who attend this school, their parents, teaching staff and Opportunity bank volunteers participated in this event to ensure better conditions for lessons and sport activities of around 50 students of this school.

„Branko Radičević“ primary school in Brestovac is one of the oldest educational institutions in the area of Leskovac. Its origins are linked to the 1888 when the first school was formed within the guest house of the church in the nearby village of Kutleš. The first school building in Brestovac was built in 1902. In mid-1958, four-grade departments from Lipovica, Kutleš, Sarlinac, Međa and Donje Brijanje, were added to this school.

Classes at Donje Brijanje branch still take place in the same building that was built in 1958. It currently has around 50 students from first to fourth grade and classes are held in double shifts. There are four teachers who commute daily from nearby villages and Leskovac to hold classes at this school. Out of three classrooms, one still has school desks and chairs dating from the year when the school was first built. This is the reason Opportunity bank decided to donate funds and replace old and battered furnishing. We have equipped this very classroom with 10 new desks and 20 chairs, a blackboard, a map and solid fuel furnace so that children aged 7 to 11 would have more enjoyable stay at school. A basketball hoop was provided for the schoolyard so that children could participate in sports in their leisure time.

In addition to this donation, Opportunity bank also donated 12 school desks and 100 chairs to primary school in Bojnik so that classrooms could become a better place for growing up and education of children. For us, in addition to social and care aspect, this day traditionally symbolizes a way of connecting to all villagers and creating an opportunity for bonding.
